Happy Summerween! Now, you all might be a tad confuzed, because perhapse as far as you were aware, there is nothing special about August 10th. Well, here I am to change your mind.
Ok, you all may know this by now, but my family and I LOVE Halloween and fall. The entire month of October is dedicated to chilling decorations, daily spooky outfits, cozy scary movie nights, and of course, lots of halloween baking. From October 1st (and maybe most of September) we are in full blown spooky vibes.
And in the middle of the summer, we miss it. Honestly, I consider August to be fall but I guess it’s still technically summer. October is actually pretty close, but it feels so far away. So my family and I decided to dedicate one day in August to all things spooky. I know we aren’t the first to do Summerween, and I think there is a day in June where everyone celebrates it but we landed on August 10 because it always seems to be storming (my favorite weather) Here are some of our traditions:
- Carving watermelons (a summery version of the classic)
- Making iced PSL’s (because we can’t deny that it is still 90 degrees out)
- Dressing spooky
- Watching spooky movies
- Making mummy personal pizzas
- Listening to our Halloween Playlist
- Spooky fall baking
Ok, that last one might just be an excuse for me to practice a recipe I have planned for October. But its still super fun! Last year, we lucked out and it was a rainy, dreary day. (Perfect!)
Last year, we spent the day in some new spooky clothes, watching Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands, and I tested out my Pumpkin and Chocolate Bat Donuts and Jack O’ Lantern Macaron. And all the while, our very long spooky playlist was blasting in the background. My dad wan’t super pleased with all of this because, let’s just say he isn’t as in to it as my mom, brother, and I are.
So, now that you all know about this wonderful holiday, lets celebrate! I don’t have a super spooky recipe for today (save those for October!!!), but I do have a yummy drink recipe for you. It takes fall flavors, like Pumpkin and spice, but puts it in an iced form for a summery twist.
For this recipe, you’re going to want to start with some cold brew. I make my own cold brew, but using store bought works just fine. You can also use hot coffee, but I find that that ends with a watered down tasting iced latte. Pour that cold brew over some ice and set aside. Next, we’re making the milk. I like to use oat milk because I think it’s creamier and the oat flavor goes well with pumpkin spice. Add your milk to a liquid measuring cup with some pumpkin spice (you can find this in most stores, but I have provided a homemade recipe in the notes), agave nectar for a little sweetness, pumpkin puree, a little bit of salt, and a dash of vanilla. The next part is super fun, you get to whip it all up. I like to use a milk frother because it gets it nice and bubbly and creamy. If you don’t have one, you can use a whisk for this, but a milk frother gets it nice and fluffy.
To finish it up, pour your pumpkin milk/foam over the cold brew, stir it up, and enjoy! Cozy flavors, in a refreshing summer format. Yum yum yum!
I have been having a lot of fun testing out my recipes for the fall lately! The house constantly smells like pumpkin spice and I am not mad about that at all. I have some really great stuff headed your way in the coming months, so stay tuned!
Cold Brew with Pumpkin Cold Foam
Equipment
- Milk frother
Ingredients
- ¼ cup cold brew I use homemade, but you can also use store bought
- ½ cup oat milk*
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 Tablespoon pumpkin puree
- 1 Tablespoon agave nectar or other sweetener of choice
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- a pinch of salt
Instructions
- Fill your glass a little over halfway with ice. Pour the cold brew over the ice. You can adjust the amount of coffee you want by how strong you want it.
- In a small bowl, glass, or liquid measuring cup, add your milk, pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin puree, agave, vanilla, and salt. Using a milk frother or whisk, whip up the milk mixture until combined and bubby. Aim to double the amount of milk you have by whipping it. Pour this mixture over the ice and coffee, stir, and enjoy!
